Matin opiskelijaboksi
Matin opiskelijaboksi on tehty kokonaan kierrätysmateriaalista.
- Huone on rakennettu kenkälaatikkoon, joka on päällystetty kontaktimuovilla.
- Seinissä on kodinremontista jäänyttä tapettia, lattiana kontaktimuovia.
- Valaisin on tehty hammastahnatuubinkorkista ja grillitikusta, toinen valaisin deodoranttipullon kuulasta.
- Pöytänä toimii lasipurkin kansi ja viinipullon korkki.
- Tuolit on muokattu kuohuviinipullon metallikorkeista.
- Pöydällä olevat lasit ovat hupparinstoppareita.
- Kirja- ja mappihylly on rakennettu pienistä listanpaloista, mapit ovat printtejä.
- Parvisänky on teepaketista, johon on laitettu lautasliinalla päällystetty vaahtomuovi patjaksi.
- Ulkopuolelta parvi on päällystetty kontaktimuovilla. Tikkaat on tehty balsan ylijäämistä.
- Pesuallas on partakoneen terien muovilaatikosta, hana on verholiuku. Allaskaappi on teepaketista.
- Rullaverhona toimii lautasliina.
- Hella on printti, liesikupu on tehty rasvapaketista, johon on laitettu mannaryynirappaus.
- Liesikuvun reunalla olevat lautaset ovat limsapullojen tiivisteitä.
- Hellalla oleva kattila on suklaarasiasta, hellan edessä oleva pelti kahvipaketin kääreen sisäpuolta.
- Lattialla oleva paperikassi on taiteltu ruskeasta kukkakaupan paperista, leivät ovat massaa.
- Naulakosta roikkuva laukku on tehty sokeripussista.
Matti opiskelee toista vuotta pääkaupungin yliopistossa. Ensimmäisenä opiskeluvuotenaan hän vuokrasi keskustassa sijaitsevaa kaksiota kaverinsa kanssa mutta rahat loppuivat jo ennen joulua, koska vuokra oli jaettunakin aivan liian korkea täysipäiväiselle opiskelijalle. Matti keskeytti opinnot puoleksi vuodeksi ja paiski töitä. Jo keväällä hän aloitti halvan vuokra-asunnon etsimiskampanjan, jonka tuloksena hän löysi pieneltä paikkakunnalta pääkaupungin ulkopuolelta siistin mutta vanhanaikaisen hellahuoneen. Vuokra on suorastaan mitätön ja pääkaupunkiin Matti pääsee kätevästi junalla. Eikä vuokrakämppää tarvitse jakaa kenenkään kanssa!
Hellahuone sijaitsee saneeratussa puutalokorttelissa. Samassa rakennuksessa on taloyhtiön saunatilat, joissa on vielä perinteinen puilla lämmitettävä sauna mutta pesutiloissa suihku ja käytävällä wc. Matin asunnossa on kylmä ja lämmin vesi mutta ei omaa wc'tä eikä suihkua. Koska Matti saa käyttää saunatiloja peseytymiseen ja käytävällä olevaa wc'tä, ei oman kylpyhuoneen puuttuminen haittaa.
Asuntoa pitää lämmittää puilla; keittiössä on puuhella. Pitkän luentopäivän jälkeen talvella asunto saattaa olla hieman jäähtynyt mutta Matti oikeasti pitää enemmän viileästä kuin liian lämpimästä.
Kaikki huonekalut ja muut tarpeelliset tavarat Matti on saanut sukulaisilta, ystäviltä tai ostanut pikkurahalla kirpparilta. Sisustaminen ei opiskelijamiestä kiinnosta. Kuppi on kuppi olipa se muovia tai posliinia ja verhot on verhot olivatpa ne millaiset tahansa. Pääasia, että kaikki tarpeellinen löytyy. Kylässä käyvä tyttöystävä tosin nyrpistelee välillä nenäänsä Matin persoonalliselle sisustamiselle eikä käytäväwc sekään naista ihastuta.
Kaikenkaikkiaan Matti on ratkaisuunsa hyvin tyytyväinen. Nyt pienetkin rahat riittävät mukavasti elämiseen ja vähän irrotteluunkin tarvittaessa. Opiskeluun voi keskittyä täysipäiväisesti ilman suurempia rahahuolia.
Matti's student flat is entirely made of household trash and leftovers from my dollhouse projects.
- The flat is constructed in a shoebox covered with self-adhesive, patterned plastic film.
- The walls are covered with real wallpaper leftovers, the flooring is made of the plastic film.
- The lamp shade is made from a toothpaste lid and barbecue stick.
- The table is a metal lid of a glass jar supported by a wine bottle cork.
- The chairs are made from the metal part of a sparkling wine bottle.
- The glasses are hood tassles.
- The book and binder shelf is constructed from leftover mini fillets, the binders are prints.
- The loft bed is made from a tea packet with a piece of foam plastic as a mattress covered with a paper napkin.
- The outside of the bed is covered with the patterned plastic film. The ladder is made from balsa wood leftovers.
- The sink is the plastic holder for razor blades, the faucet is a curtain ring. The cabinet under the sink is made from another tea packet.
- The shade above the sink is a piece of a paper napkin.
- The stove is a print, the hood is made from a plastic margarine box plastered with semolina (farina).
- The plates by the hood edge are from soda bottles.
- The kettle on the stove is made from the inside of a chocolate box, the tin plate in front of the stove is from a coffee packet wrapping.
- The paper bag on the floor is cut out of 1:1 paper bag paper, the breads [in the bag] are made of polymer clay.
- The hanging bag is made out of a bag of sugar.
Matti is a second-year student at a university in the capital city. During his first years of study he rented a two-room apartment with his friend. However, he ran out of money already before Christmas as the rent was way too high for a full-time student. Matti went to work for six months and started his search for an inexpensive place to rent. He finally found an old-fashioned one-room flat in a small town outside the capital. The rent is really low and Matti can travel to the capital by train. And, he does not have to share his flat with anyone!
The flat is located in a set of renovated wooden town houses. It is in the same building with the sauna and wash room. The sauna has a stove heated with wood but the wash room has a modern shower. There is also a toilet in the corridor. Matti does not have a bathroom of his own but as he can use the shower in the wash room and the toilet in the corridor, he is quite content.
His flat must be heated with wood, too. There is an old-fashioned stove in the kitchen. In the winter, when Matti returns home after a long day of lectures, the flat has cooled off quite a bit. It is OK, though, as he really prefers cooler air to hot.
All the furniture and other necessities Matti has either received from friends and relatives, or bought them at a flea market. He is not interested in interior decoration; as long as he has a cup for his tea, he does not care whether it is plastic or fine porcelain. The same applies to curtains and furniture as well. The important thing for Matti is that he has everything he needs. When his girlfriend comes for a visit, she often makes remarks of his peculiar home with lots of mismatch stuff. She is not very happy either about having to use the toilet in the corridor and the shower in the wash room.
All in all, Matti is very happy with his new home. Now he manages financially perfectly well as a full-time student without having to work during the terms and has some money left for recreation as well.
